Grandma’s Secret Monterey Sausage Pie

Ingredients

1 lb (450g) breakfast sausage (pork or turkey)

2 cups shredded Monterey Jack cheese

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

1 cup milk

4 large eggs

½ cup biscuit mix (Bisquick or similar)

1 small onion, finely chopped (optional)

½ tsp garlic powder

½ tsp black pepper

¼ tsp salt

¼ tsp paprika (optional, for color)

👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven
    Heat oven to 180°C / 350°F and grease a 9-inch pie dish or medium baking dish.
  2. Cook the Sausage
    In a skillet, brown the sausage with the chopped onion until fully cooked.
    Drain any excess grease.
  3. Layer the Dish
    Spread the cooked sausage evenly in the bottom of the pie dish.
    Top with Monterey Jack + half the cheddar cheese.
  4. Make the Custard Mixture
    In a bowl, whisk together:

Eggs

Milk

Biscuit mix

Garlic powder

Salt and pepper
Pour this smooth mixture over the sausage and cheese.

  1. Add Final Cheese
    Sprinkle the remaining cheddar on top.
  2. Bake
    Bake 35–40 minutes until golden brown, puffed, and set in the center.
  3. Rest & Serve
    Let cool 10 minutes before slicing so it holds together beautifully.

Add green chiles for a Southwestern touch.

Swap Monterey Jack for pepper jack for a spicy version.
